Say Goodbye to Sugar: 3 Surprising Causes of Sugar Cravings

By: Dr. April Schulte, Mother Nature's Doctor

Occasionally, after describing their primary reasons for visiting me, a patient will lean in and ask, “By the way, can you do anything about sugar cravings?” My answer is always, “Yes, I can.” Quite often, these cravings provide important clues about how I can best address their main concerns.

Sugar cravings typically stem from one or more of three primary causes—and they may surprise you. Before diving into these causes, it’s helpful to understand that in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each organ system is associated with an element and a flavor. For instance, the digestive system relates to the Earth element and the sweet flavor.

Three Leading Causes of Sugar Cravings

1. Lack of Self-Nourishment

The first cause of sugar cravings is a lack of self-nourishment. In nature, Mother Earth symbolizes abundant nourishment for all living beings. Similarly, in TCM, the Earth element—represented by the stomach and pancreas—serves as our internal “Mother Earth,” responsible for extracting nutrients and “qi” (vital energy) from food.

When we consume processed foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats, we weaken this vital system. However, self-nourishment extends beyond diet. It includes balancing work, play, and rest while honoring mental, physical, and spiritual needs. Stress and worry, for instance, can impair digestion, leading to symptoms like bloating, acid reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome.

Because the sweet flavor is associated with digestive strength, the body often craves sweetness to heal itself. Unfortunately, our cravings rarely discriminate between natural, nourishing sweet foods (like sweet potatoes or rice) and processed, sugar-laden snacks.

2. Weak Digestive System

When the digestive system is compromised—due to stress, food sensitivities, or nutrient deficiencies—it struggles to extract nutrients and qi from food effectively. Feeling undernourished, the body seeks a quick energy source, triggering sugar cravings.

Sugar provides instant, easily accessible energy, absorbed as early as the mouth, bypassing the need for extensive digestion. While this mechanism offers temporary relief, it doesn’t address the root issue.

3. Candida Overgrowth

Candida, a yeast naturally present in the digestive tract, feeds on sugar. When Candida overgrows, it can drive intense sugar cravings to sustain itself. Left unchecked, Candida overgrowth can cause a host of other symptoms and further weaken digestion.

The Bigger Picture: Healing the Earth Element

These three causes often overlap. A lack of self-nourishment can weaken digestion, leading to broader health issues like chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, frequent infections, depression, acid reflux, and chronic tendonitis.

Understanding that sugar cravings involve both emotional and physical dimensions highlights the need for an integrative approach to healing. Strengthening the Earth element requires a multi-faceted strategy:

  • Chinese Herbs can help restore digestive function.
  • Behavioral Health Support (like life coaching, counseling, and biofeedback) can manage stress and emotional triggers.
  • Nutrition Consultations focused on using food as medicine can rebuild digestive strength.

When practitioners across disciplines collaborate, the synergistic benefits of each therapy become even more powerful, providing a comprehensive path to health and vitality.
